Capital city description

“Dhaka” is the capital city of Bangladesh and the central city of the Dhaka division. Dhaka is a megacity and one of the major cities in South Asia. It is situated on the banks of the Buriganga River, and it is the largest city in Bangladesh. The Metropolitan area of Dhaka has a population of about 14 million. It is one of the ninth-largest in the world and one of the most populated cities.

Dhaka city is also known as the ‘City of the Mosque,  the world’s best muslin fabrics were produced. Besides. Dhaka is identified as the ‘Rickshaw Capital of the World.’ About 400,000 to 450,000 rickshaws operate in this city every day. Today Dhaka is one of the main cultural, educational, and commercial centers of South Asia.

Climate

The climate of Bangladesh is subtropical in the center-north and tropical in the south, with an agreeably warm and sunny winter from November to February. It's characterized by a short spring - from March to May, and a long season of rains from June to October. About 80% of all these rains fall from May to mid-October. As a result, rainfall over the entire Ganga and Brahmaputra valley leads to the submergence of vast areas.

  1. The national animal of Bangladesh is the royal Bengal tiger. It has a roar that can be heard up to 3 km away.

  3. Cricket is the most beloved sport in the country. In 1999, its national cricket team was part of the World Cup, and in 2000, it received Test status, an honor in the sport for it is the ultimate test of a team's ability and endurance.

  • Bangladesh shi usually take rice three times a day with delicious dishes and curry. Bengali has a name “Mache Vat e Bengali” which indicates their favorite foods are rice and fish.

Festivals & Events

Eid ul-Fitr

Date: March ( end of Ramadan)

Eid ul-Fitr is the most prominent Muslim festival celebrated in Bangladesh and elsewhere globally by Muslim people with due solemnity and enthusiasm on the day following Ramadan, the month of fasting. Big gatherings are held at the Eidgahs (open fields) and mosques in the morning. The country's biggest gathering is held at Sholakia in Kishoreganj, where about half a million people gather for Eid prayers.

On the festival day, people dressed in new clothes visit each other's houses and exchange greetings. In rural areas, Eid fairs are organized. Cultural, sports, and other social events like boat races and puppet shows are also organized to promote friendship and solidarity. A colorful Eid procession is organized in old Dhaka.

Basanta Utsab

Date: March

Basanta Utsab is the first day of spring, celebrated in a very colorful manner throughout the country on the 1st Day of Falgun, the 11th month of Bangla calendar, which falls in mid-February of the Gregorian calendar. During the festival, people wear colorful dresses, and colorful fairs and cultural programs are organized. Women typically wear yellow sharis and decorate themselves with floral ornaments. 

Pohela Boishakh

Date: April 14 (Gregorian Calendar)

 Pohela Boishakh is an integral part of Bangladesh’s cultural heritage. People start this day with new hope, thoroughly cleaning the failures and sorrows of the preceding year. In rural areas, businesspeople close their old books of accounts, open new ones, and treat their customers with traditional sweets to renew the business relationship. People dressed in colorful traditional clothes visit their friends, relatives, and neighbors to exchange greetings.

Fairs are arranged in many parts of the country where various agricultural products, traditional handicrafts, toys, cosmetics, and different kinds of food and sweets are sold. The fairs also provide entertainment with singers, dancers, and traditional plays and songs. Pohela Boishakh is also celebrated in remarkable ways in the capital Dhaka and other major cities of Bangladesh.

 Ekushey is celebrated on the 21st day of February every year. It is known as the National Mother Language Day, which marks the anniversary of the martyrdom of those who died while protesting the imposition of Urdu as the national language of East and West Pakistan. Victory Day

Bangladesh celebrates Victory Day on the 16th of December to commemorate the ultimate victory of the Allied Forces over Pakistani forces in the Bangladesh Liberation War in 1971, marking the nine-month liberation war and the official secession of East Pakistan into Bangladesh.

National Martyrs Memorial ( Jatiyo Sriti Shoudho)

National Martyrs Memorial or Jatiyo Sriti Shoudho is the national monument of Bangladesh, erected as an iconic structure in memory of those brave sons and daughters who laid down their lives in the Liberation war of 1971. This monument is situated at Savar, about 35km northwest of Dhaka. Architect Moinul Hossain designed the monument.

The whole complex area is about 84 acres, surrounded by a green belt of approximately 24.7 acres. Some mass graves and a water body is located in front of the monument. From the main entrance, visitors get a solid axial view of this structure. To reach it, one has to cross a crooked and uneven path and a manmade lake by a bridge that symbolizes the nation’s difficult path to independence and the troublesome journey that lies ahead.

Lalbag Fort

Sonargaon

National Parliament House

The National Parliament House of Bangladesh is one of the twentieth century’s most meaningful buildings; designed by famous architect Louis I Kahn Located at Sher-e Bangla Nagar; this building is the largest legislative complex in the world.

The construction work of the Bangladesh National Parliament commenced in 1964 but was halted due to the liberation war, and it was finally completed in 1982. The entire complex is divided into three parts: The Main Plaza, the South Plaza, and the Presidential Plaza.
